It can be a shock for children to find out that their parents are to divorce and they will no longer all be living in the same family home.

Before you explain the divorce to your children it is often a good idea to get legal advice about the divorce process so you feel more informed and in control and can answer any questions your children may have.

Your children may ask about where they will live and whether they will have to change schools and it helps to have obtained specialist legal advice about your situation and what is likely to happen financially.

If possible, you and your spouse should talk to your children together and show them that although you are separating, they are still loved and are your top priority. It’s also best to try and keep any arguments or discussions about legal issues away from your children as much as possible and make sure that they know that they are not in any way to blame for what has happened.

Obtaining specialist legal advice from solicitors such as Austin Kemp as early as possible in a relationship break-up can help you and your spouse to prepare how and what to tell your children.
