Watching parents go through a divorce can be an emotionally distressing and unsettling time for any child.

During a divorce they may not see one parent as much as they used to and may even have to move into a new family home if it is not possible to stay in the one they shared with both parents.

During this time, it is best to keep the same parenting style in order to minimise the change and disruption in your children’s lives. You may feel guilty and be tempted to relax your house rules to make your children feel better but this could, in fact, have the opposite effect. Relaxing rules can make children feel even more insecure in what is already a scary time for them. Conversely, becoming stricter than you were before the divorce proceedings started could make your children distressed or even frightened.

Getting expert legal advice from specialist law firms such as Austin Kemp as early on as possible during a relationship breakdown can help you to feel less overwhelmed and enable you to make more informed decisions on how you plan to guide your children through the divorce process.
