What’s the best time to tell the children that we are getting a divorce?

Telling children that you are getting a divorce should only be done once you are both 100% sure that the divorce will be going ahead.

If you tell them before you are sure and then you end up deciding to stay together, this could cause your children a great deal of distress and worry.

If possible, you should tell your children together with your spouse in a quiet place about the decision to divorce when you both have time to stay and answer any questions or worries your children may have.

You will need to be ready to comfort and reassure your children and it can help you to feel that you have the knowledge and control in order to do this effectively if you have already sought specialist independent legal advice from solicitors such as Austin Kemp.

It’s also a good idea for each of you to speak to a solicitor about contact arrangements or where you’re going to live so you can answer these questions with authority, which will help your children to feel more secure.
