You may have heard about a do-it-yourself (DIY) divorce and how it is a much cheaper option than engaging a solicitor.

If you both agree to the divorce you can file for divorce and complete all the necessary paperwork yourselves. You can even send it straight to court without the help of a solicitor.

The divorce process itself is actually quite straightforward. However, most couples run into difficulty when discussing arrangements for the children and how to split finances. Professional help may not be needed if there are no children involved and you have no financial ties to each other. Even if this is the case, it is a good idea to arrange at least one meeting with an independent solicitor to make sure that you understand your rights. It is very important that you don’t leave any finances outstanding as you could be challenged years later.

If you or your spouse is a high net worth individual with international investments and assets we would highly recommend that you seek legal advice from specialist solicitors such as Austin Kemp before beginning the divorce process. Getting independent legal advice early on can make a real difference to your divorce settlement.
